Her father was serving in the Army at the time of her birth and had recently relocated her entire family to Italy. They were stationed at the Caserma Ederle military complex. The family moved to Castle Rock, Colorado when Amy was just eight years old. Her dad retired from the Army and began to sing professionally in nightclubs. Adams describes some of her best memories of childhood as attending her dad's shows, and sipping Shirley Temples at the bar. The nine-member family loved to camp and hike together and also perform skits of amateur composed by their parents. She was raised time within the Mormon church, but the family stopped attending church after her parents divorced in 1995.
