Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born in Paris France to British parents Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson who were both lawyers. When she moved to Oxfordshire at the age of five, Emma was enrolled in the Dragon School. Emma chose to become an actor when she was six. For several years, she attended the Oxford branch Stagecoach Theatre Arts part-time school. There she learned singing, dancing and acting. By the time she turned 10 Emma took part in a variety of Stagecoach productions as well as school productions. When 1999 began, casting was announced with the casting process for Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone (2001) the movie adaptation of British author J.K. Rowling's bestselling novel. Emma was discovered by casting agents through Emma's Oxford theatre teacher. David Heyman, the producer of Harry Potter Harry Potter's Sorcerer's Stone, as well as Ron Weasley told Emma after 8 auditions, that she had been cast in these roles. Emma was chosen to play alongside Daniel Radcliffe Rupert Grint and Rupert Grint. Emma's first cinematic appearance was alongside Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the year 2001. The film broke all records in terms of opening day and weekend revenues, and it also became one of the top 2001 films. The film was praised by critics and its performances by the three young stars. The highly distributed British paper The Daily Telegraph called her acting performance as admirable. Afterward, Emma was shortlisted for five prizes for her work in the film and was awarded the Young Artist Award for Leading Young Actress in an Feature Film.
